[refactor] Refactor Option/Result combinators (#3180)

Code simplifications using `Option`/`Result` combinators to make pattern-matches a tad simpler. 
Opinions on these loosely held, happy to adjust in review.

Tool-aided by [comby-rust](https://github.com/huitseeker/comby-rust).
